Paraules

Burano. Fotografia: Empar Sáez

PARAULES

Destrals

que cau i rodola,
un crani blanc
rosegat de males herbes.
Al cap dels anys
les trobo pels camins.

Paraules eixutes, sense genet,
el trepig infatigable dels cascs.
Mentrestant

WORDS

Axes
After whose stroke the wood rings,
And the echoes!
Echoes traveling
Off from the center like horses.

The sap
Wells like tears, like the
Water striving
To re-establish its mirror
Over the rock

That drops and turns,
A white skull,
Eaten by weedy greens.
Years later I
Encounter them on the road-

Words dry and riderless,
The indefatigable hoof-taps.
While
From the bottom of the pool, fixed stars
Govern a life.

Graula negra en temps plujós

Brno, Moràvia. Fotografia: Empar Sáez

Graula negra en temps plujós

En aquella branca ferma d'allà dalt
encorbada, una graula negra i molla
ordena i reordena les plomes sota la pluja.
No espero cap miracle

sorgir, incandescent,

conferint-li resplendor, honor,

a prop meu. Només sé que una graula
ordenant les seves plomes negres pot brillar prou
per omplir-me els sentits, obligant-me
a alçar parpelles i concedir-me

un breu respir de la por
de la indiferència completa. Amb sort,
si segueixo, tossuda, per aquesta estació
de fatiga, podré
dotar-me de

contingut.

Black Rook In Rainy Weather

On the stiff twig up there
Hunches a wet black rook
Arranging and rearranging its feathers in the rain.
I do not expect a miracle
Or an accident

To set the sight on fire
In my eye, nor seek
Any more in the desultory weather some design,
But let spotted leaves fall as they fall,
Without ceremony, or portent.

Although, I admit, I desire,
Occasionally, some backtalk
From the mute sky, I can’t honestly complain:
A certain minor light may still
Lean incandescent

Out of kitchen table or chair
As if a celestial burning took
Possession of the most obtuse objects now and then —
Thus hallowing an interval
Otherwise inconsequent

By bestowing largesse, honour,
One might say love. At any rate, I now walk
Wary (for it could happen
Even in this dull, ruinous landscape); sceptical,
Yet politic; ignorant

Of whatever angel may choose to flare
Suddenly at my elbow. I only know that a rook
Ordering its black feathers can so shine
As to seize my senses, haul
My eyelids up, and grant

A brief respite from fear
Of total neutrality. With luck,
Trekking stubborn through this season
Of fatigue, I shall
Patch together a content

Of sorts. Miracles occur,
If you care to call those spasmodic
Tricks of radiance miracles. The wait's begun again,
The long wait for the angel,
For that rare, random descent.

Una finestra, or sagrat.
El foc la fa preciosa,
el mateix foc

fon els heretges de sèu
foragitant els jueus.
Els seus pal·lis gruixuts suren

damunt la cicatriu de Polònia, Alemanya
cremada.
No moren pas.

Aus grises m’obsessionen el cor,
cendra de boca, cendra d’ull.
S’assenten. En l’alt

precipici
que buidà un home dins l’espai
els forns lluïren com cels, incandescents.

És un cor,
aquests holocaust on camino,
oh infant d’or, el món vol matar i menjar.

Mary’s song

The Sunday lamb cracks in its fat.
The fat
Sacrifices its opacity. . . .

A window, holy gold.
The fire makes it precious,
The same fire

Melting the tallow heretics,
Ousting the Jews.
Their thick palls float

Over the cicatrix of Poland, burnt-out
Germany.
They do not die.

Grey birds obsess my heart,
Mouth-ash, ash of eye.
They settle. On the high

Precipice
That emptied one man into space
The ovens glowed like heavens, incandescent.

It is a heart,
This holocaust I walk in,
O golden child the world will kill and eat.

xuclant minerals i amor matern

Aleshores el cel i jo conversem obertament,
i seré útil quan definitivament m’ajegui;

I Am Vertical

But I would rather be horizontal.
I am not a tree with my root in the soil
Sucking up minerals and motherly love
So that each March I may gleam into leaf,
Nor am I the beauty of a garden bed
Attracting my share of Ahs and spectacularly painted,
Unknowing I must soon unpetal.
Compared with me, a tree is immortal
And a flower-head not tall, but more startling,
And I want the one's longevity and the other's daring.

Tonight, in the infinitesimal light of the stars,
The trees and flowers have been strewing their cool odors.
I walk among them, but none of them are noticing.
Sometimes I think that when I am sleeping
I must most perfectly resemble them--
Thoughts gone dim.
It is more natural to me, lying down.
Then the sky and I are in open conversation,
And I shall be useful when I lie down finally:
The the trees may touch me for once, and the flowers have
time for me.

Els Maniquins de Munic

Estocolm.

jo i tu.

on l’endemà s’encabiran enormes dits.

relluint,
relluint i engolint

veus inexistents. La neu no té veu.

The Munich Mannequins

Perfection is terrible, it cannot have children.
Cold as snow breath, it tamps the womb

Where the yew trees blow like hydras,
The tree of life and the tree of life

Unloosing their moons, month after month, to no purpose.
The blood flood is the flood of love,

The absolute sacrifice.
It means: no more idols but me,

Me and you.
So, in their sulfur loveliness, in their smiles

These mannequins lean tonight
In Munich, morgue between Paris and Rome,

Naked and bald in their furs,
Orange lollies on silver sticks,

Intolerable, without minds.
The snow drops its pieces of darkness,

Nobody's about. In the hotels
Hands will be opening doors and setting

Down shoes for a polish of carbon
Into which broad toes will go tomorrow.

O the domesticity of these windows,
The baby lace, the green-leaved confectionery,

The thick Germans slumbering in their bottomless Stolz.
And the black phones on hooks

Glittering
Glittering and digesting

Voicelessness. The snow has no voice
