Els homes balmats

ELS HOMES BALMATS
Un penic per al Vell Guy
I
Som els homes balmats
som els homes farcits
recolzats l'un en l'altre
closca plena de palla. Ai las!
Les nostres veus seques quan
xiuxiuegem plegats
són sense sentit, tranquil·les,
com el vent a l'herba seca
o peus de rates sobre vidres trencats
al nostre celler exhaust
figura sense forma, ombra sense color,
II
aquests no apareixen:
allí els somnis són
llum de sol sobre una columna trencada
allí hi ha un arbre balancejant-se
i les veus són
en el cant del vent
més distants i més solemnes
que un estel que s'esvaeix.
Que no m'apropi més
al regne del somni de la mort
que porti també
disfresses tan intencionades
despertar sol
en l'hora en què
tremolem de tendresa
llavis que voldríem besar
formulen pregàries a una pedra trencada.
IV
Els ulls no són aquí
aquí no hi ha ulls
en aquesta vall d'estels que moren
en aquesta vall balmada
aquesta maixella trencada dels nostres regnes perduts
en aquest últim lloc de trobada
anem junts a les palpentes
i evitem de parlar
reunits en aquesta platja del túmid riu
sense vista, a menys que
els ulls reapareguin
com l'estrella perpètua
rosa multifoliada
del regne crepuscular de la nit
l'única esperança
dels homes buits.
V
Ballem entorn de la figa de moro
figa de moro figa de moro
ballem entorn de la figa de moro
a les cinc en punt del matí.
Entre la idea
i la realitat
entre el moviment
i l'acció
cau l'Ombra
Perquè Teu és el Regne
entre la concepció
i la creació
entre l'emoció
i la resposta
cau l'Ombra
La vida és molt llarga
entre el desig
i l'espasme
entre la potència
i l'existència
entre l'essència
i la concreció
cau l'Ombra

A penny for the Old Guy
I
We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats' feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar
Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;
Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom
Remember us—if at all—not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men.
II
Eyes I dare not meet in dreams
In death's dream kingdom
These do not appear:
There, the eyes are
Sunlight on a broken column
There, is a tree swinging
And voices are
In the wind's singing
More distant and more solemn
Than a fading star.
Let me be no nearer
In death's dream kingdom
Let me also wear
Such deliberate disguises
Rat's coat, crowskin, crossed staves
In a field
Behaving as the wind behaves
No nearer—
Not that final meeting
In the twilight kingdom
With eyes I dare not meet in dreams.
III
This is the dead land
This is cactus land
Here the stone images
Are raised, here they receive
The supplication of a dead man's hand
Under the twinkle of a fading star.
Is it like this
In death's other kingdom
Waking alone
At the hour when we are
Trembling with tenderness
Lips that would kiss
Form prayers to broken stone.
IV
The eyes are not here
There are no eyes here
In this valley of dying stars
In this hollow valley
This broken jaw of our lost kingdoms
In this last of meeting places
We grope together
And avoid speech
Gathered on this beach of the tumid river
Sightless, unless
The eyes reappear
As the perpetual star
Multifoliate rose
Of death's twilight kingdom

The hope only
Of empty men.

Here we go round the prickly pear
Prickly pear prickly pear
Here we go round the prickly pear
At five o'clock in the morning.
Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom
Between the conception
And the creation
Between the emotion
And the response
Falls the Shadow
Life is very long
Between the desire
And the spasm
Between the potency
And the existence
Between the essence
And the descent
Falls the Shadow
For Thine is the Kingdom
For Thine is
Life is
For Thine is the
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

I
No ho sé.
Altres ecos
Sec estany, sec morter, fosques vores,

I
Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future,
And time future contained in time past.
If all time is eternally present
All time is unredeemable.
What might have been is an abstraction
Remaining a perpetual possibility
Only in a world of speculation.
What might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present.
Footfalls echo in the memory
Down the passage which we did not take
Towards the door we never opened
Into the rose-garden. My words echo
Thus, in your mind.
But to what purpose
Disturbing the dust on a bowl of rose-leaves
I do not know.
Other echoes
Inhabit the garden. Shall we follow?
Quick, said the bird, find them, find them,
Round the corner. Through the first gate,
Into our first world, shall we follow
The deception of the thrush? Into our first world.
There they were, dignified, invisible,
Moving without pressure, over the dead leaves,
In the autumn heat,
through the vibrant air,
And the bird called, in response to
The unheard music hidden in the shrubbery,
And the unseen eyebeam crossed, for the roses
Had the look of flowers that are looked at.
There they were as our guests, accepted and accepting.
So we moved, and they, in a formal pattern,
Along the empty alley, into the box circle,
To look down into the drained pool.
Dry the pool, dry concrete, brown edged,
And the pool was filled with water out of sunlight,
And the lotos rose, quietly, quietly,
The surface glittered out of heart of light,
And they were behind us, reflected in the pool.
Then a cloud passed, and the pool was empty.
Go, said the bird, for the leaves were full of children,
Hidden excitedly, containing laughter.
Go, go, go, said the bird: human kind
Cannot bear very much reality.
Time past and time future
What might have been and what has been
Point to one end, which is always present.
