Aquesta és la primera cosa
que he entès:

This is the first thing
I have understood:
Time is the echo of an axe
Within a wood.

i obrers matinadors; vaig, solitari,
envers cels, espantalls, pallers, faisans
i llebres, vora el riu lent, eixamplant-se,
núvols d'or apilats i fang que brilla,

confluint amb sorpresa a la ciutat
on s'apleguen estàtues, torres, grues,

que viuen on sols vénen venedors
i parents, pastoral que put a peix
amb vaixells i museu de l'esclavatge,
consolats, tatuatges, dones fosques;
i enllà de llur mur toix i hipotecat
isolats pobles on la soledat

clarifica les vides. El silenci
cau, aquí, com la calda. S'espesseixen
les fulles i floreixen les maleses,
van fent via les aigües oblidades,
puja un aire poblat i lluminós;

HERE

Swerving east, from rich industrial shadows
And traffic all night north; swerving through fields
Too thin and thistled to be called meadows,
And now and then a harsh-named halt, that shields
Workmen at dawn; swerving to solitude
Of skies and scarecrows, haystacks, hares and pheasants,
And the widening river's slow presence,
The piled gold clouds, the shining gull-marked mud,

Gathers to the surprise of a large town:
Here domes and statues, spires and cranes cluster
Beside grain-scattered streets, barge-crowded water,
And residents from raw estates, brought down
The dead straight miles by stealing flat-faced trolleys,
Push through plate-glass swing doors to their desires—
Cheap suits, red kitchen-ware, sharp shoes, iced lollies,
Electric mixers, toasters, washers, driers—

A cut-price crowd, urban yet simple, dwelling
Where only salesmen and relations come
Within a terminate and fishy-smelling
Pastoral of ships up streets, the slave museum,
Tattoo-shops, consulates, grim head-scarfed wives;
And out beyond its mortgaged half-build edges
Fast-shadowed wheat-fields, running high as hedges,
Isolate villages where removed lives

Loneliness clarifies. Here silence stands
Like heat. Here leaves unnoticed thicken,
Hidden weeds flower, neglected waters quicken,
Luminously-peopled air ascends;
And past the poppies bluish neutral distance
Ends the land suddenly beyond a beach
Of shapes and shingles. Here is unfettered existence:
Facing the sun, untalkative, out of reach.

Rostre de lleó suspès
sobreeixint al centre
d'un cel sense mobles,
que n'estàs de quiet
i de desemparat,
flor única sense tija,
brollant sense recompensa.

L'ull et veu
reduït per la distància
a un origen,
el teu cap de pètals com flames
que exploten sense aturall.
L'escalfor és l'eco
del teu or.

Encunyat allí enmig
d'horitzontals solitàries,
existeixes obertament.
Cada hora les nostres necessitats
s'enfilen i tornen, com àngels.
Entreobrint-te com una mà
tu dónes per sempre.

Suspended lion face
Spilling at the centre
Of an unfurnished sky
How still you stand,
And how unaided
Single stalkless flower
You pour unrecompensed.

The eye sees you
Simplified by distance
Into an origin,
Your petalled head of flames
Continuously exploding.
Heat is the echo of your
Gold.

Coined there among
Lonely horizontals
You exist openly.
Our needs hourly
Climb and return like angels.
Unclosing like a hand,
You give for ever.

AUBADE

Quedo encegat. No de remordiment
—pel bé no fet, l'amor no dat, el temps
malgastat— ni tampoc d'aflicció
perquè una vida pugui trigar tant
a sortir-se'n, o no, d'un mal inici;
sinó per la buidor total, per sempre,
l'extinció cap on ens adrecem
i on ens perdrem segur. Ja no ser aquí
ni enlloc, i això aviat;

—brocat vast, musical i tot arnat—
ho intentava, fingint que no moríem,
i arguments capciosos deien que
cap so, ni gust, res per pensar,
per estimar o sentir-se acompanyat,
una anestèsia d'on ningú no torna.

gent o beguda. El valor no serveix:
és sols no espantar els altres. Ser valent
ningú no salva. Mors

argila.

AUBADE

I work all day, and get half drunk at night.
Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.
In time the curtain edges will grow light.
Till then I see what’s really always there:
Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,
Making all thought impossible but how
And where and when I shall myself die.
Arid interrogation: yet the dread
Of dying, and being dead,
Flashes afresh to hold and horrify.

The mind blanks at the glare. Not in remorse
—The good not done, the love not given, time
Torn off unused—nor wretchedly because
An only life can take so long to climb
Clear of its wrong beginnings, and may never;
But at the total emptiness for ever,
The sure extinction that we travel to
And shall be lost in always. Not to be here,
Not to be anywhere,
And soon; nothing more terrible, nothing more true.

This is a special way of being afraid
No trick dispels. Religion used to try,
That vast moth-eaten musical brocade
Created to pretend we never die,
And specious stuff that says No rational being
Can fear a thing it will not feel
, not seeing
That this is what we fear —no sight, no sound,
No touch or taste or smell, nothing to think with,
Nothing to love or link with,
The anaesthetic from which none come round.

And so it stays just on the edge of vision,
A small unfocused blur, a standing chill
That slows each impulse down to indecision.
Most things may never happen: this one will,
And realisation of it rages out
In furnace-fear when we are caught without
People or drink. Courage is no good:
It means not scaring others. Being brave
Lets no one off the grave.
Death is no different whined at than withstood.

Slowly light strengthens, and the room takes shape.
It stands plain as a wardrobe, what we know,
Have always known, know that we can’t escape,
Yet can’t accept. One side will have to go.
Meanwhile telephones crouch, getting ready to ring
In locked-up offices, and all the uncaring
Intricate rented world begins to rouse.
The sky is white as clay, with no sun.
Work has to be done.
Postmen like doctors go from house to house.
